Mubarak, like any other self-respecting “head of [a sovereign] state,” will not yield to “commands from Washington;” it is time Clinton and Obama understand the mentality of other people, especially that for those in the Arab World, a world with pride more important than common sense!.
Obama’s Administration, behind the scenes, should have used “a carrot and a stick” approach:
The carrot, tell Mubarak in public that the US will stand behind him “come hell or high water!”
The stick: Tell Mubarak, in private, that if does not resign and name a replacement within one week the US money spigot will be shut off, and shut off entirely.
Since Egypt could function for one whole month without US funds, suggesting that continuing funding was contingent on Mubarak’s resignation within a hard and fast time-line, would force the man to take the prudent root and name a replacement, likely the head of Egypt’s Supreme Court, which is consistent with Egypt’s constitution…
